When hiring at Google begins (which seems to happen less and less often nowadays) there is a huge surge of interest for the positions that are available. This comes as no surprise really. After all, this is probably one of the most prestigious jobs in the computing world. As you can probably guess though, getting a position here is tough, no matter what you are intending to apply for. On this page I want to run you through the basic process of hiring at Google, and what the recruiters will be on the lookout for.
What you need to remember is that when it comes to hiring at Google this is no standard process. In all likelihood you will be interviewed by five or six different people. These will all be sharing information with one another throughout the process. It will be a joint effort with regards to whether you are hired or not.

Due to the popularity of the positions at the internet giant, they can afford to be really selective about who they hire. Do not expect to get through the recruitment stages if you really aren’t the best of the best. This is the sort of things that they will be looking out for:

  • Google need to know that you are a born leader. This means that you have a wealth of experience in the industry when it comes to leading a team. You may not need to lead a team in your position, although they want to know that you are going to be part of the cog that helps make everything work.
  • You are going to need a LOT of experience when it comes to your role. You will be asked to do a number of tests to ensure that you are suitable.
  • You will be examined on your problem solving skills. It doesn’t matter if you get the right answer, they want to know how you think.
  • How suited you are to working at Google. They call this the ‘Googleyness’. They want to know that you are going to fit in the environment.

I am going to be honest with you, when it comes to hiring at Google the recruitment is pretty in depth. However, they believe that the more difficult it is to get through the recruitment stages, the better quality of candidate they will get out of it. Honestly, if you are suited for the position perfectly then you will get through quite easily. If you aren’t, you will not get the position. As one of the largest computing companies in the world they really do demand the best, and they know they can have the best due to the amount of incentives that they offer their staff.
